Preserving seeds & Knowledge

Seed Bank Partnership

The Hawaiʻi Island Seed Bank collaborates in a State-wide seed bank partnership called the Hawaiʻi Seed Bank Partnership (HSBP). We are working together to preserve genetic diversity of Hawaiian species by building knowledge and sharing information about banking Hawaiian seeds. This partnership is lead by Laukahi, the Hawai’i Plant Conservation Network.

Founding Partners of HSBP are:Lyon Aboretum-O’ahuO’ahu Army National Resources Program-O’ahuNational Tropical Botanical Garden-Kauai, Hawai’i Island Seed Bank-Hawai’i Island, and the USDA’s National Center for Genetic Resource Preservation-Ft. Collins, Colorado.

Additional partners are: US Fish & Wildlife Service, State of Hawai’i Department of Land & Natural Resources-Division of Forestry & Wildlife, Plant Extinction Prevention Program of Hawai’i, Pu’u Kukui Watershed Preserve, Wai’anae Mountains Watershed Partnership, Haleakalā National Park, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, UH Manoa Department of Botany, UH Center for Conservation Research & Training, and Maui Nui Botanical Gardens.

The Hawaiʻi Island Seed Bank is also partnering with the largest native seed bank in the world, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Millennium Seed Bank, in England. We are currently working on a project called, The Global Tree Seed Project. For this project we are collecting seed from native Hawaiʻi tree species and banking it for future restoration or research. Half of the seed is being stored at our seed bank in Hawaiʻi and the other half is stored at the Millennium Seed Bank as a back up for our collections.
